Is Debt Consolidation a Good Idea? A Decision Test

Debt consolidation can be worthwhile when the payment is affordable and the overall terms fit your goal, after you weigh fees, repayment length and total cost. If you only want a lower monthly payment, a longer term can raise the total cost. You may knowingly accept that higher cost to avoid missed payments. Test both with your own numbers first.
It can help when
- Consolidation might lower monthly payments, make payments easier to manage, decrease interest rates and save money overall.
- Paying card balances down with a loan may help your score.
Think twice when
- Upfront fees and the chance of ending up deeper in debt are real drawbacks.
- A lower payment may come with a longer term, which means more interest over the life of the loan.
- Applying can cost points.
You are deciding whether to roll several debts into one payment. Start with the test below. Then weigh the risks, run your own math, and check whether you should skip consolidation entirely.
Is debt consolidation a good idea for you? Run this test
Whether it passes depends on your goal. Check that the payment fits your budget, then weigh fees, repayment length and total cost74. If your goal is savings, the new rate needs to beat your current rates after fees7. If your goal is easier cash flow, you may knowingly accept a higher total cost for a lower payment64. Consolidation combines debts into a new loan with one monthly payment9. It does not erase what you owe9.
Your profile shapes the offer. Lenders will very likely pull your credit report and scores8, and lower rates generally go to people with higher scores8. Desirable terms may require good credit7. Treat score figures as guidelines, not cutoffs. Borrowers with scores of 740 or higher generally get the best rates9, and consolidation may not be a good option when a score is lower than 6709. Lenders set their own minimums, and Prosper lists 64015. Achieve lists 560, or 660 for debt consolidation loans of $35,000 or more17. Some lenders also set income minimums, such as Discover's $25,000 minimum annual income1. LendingPoint lists $35,000 annual income14 and is not available in Nevada or West Virginia14.
Verdicts by situation:
- Good credit, high-rate card balances, payment fits your budget: price it out. Proceed only if a quote passes the steps below.
- A quote is no lower than your current rate: it may not meet a savings goal. If you want payment relief, compare affordability and total cost before deciding. Many low advertised rates may be teaser rates that last only a certain time, so ask whether the rate is fixed for the whole term4.
- You fear missing payments: a lower payment may be worth a higher total cost. Accept that trade knowingly.
- Your debt comes from spending more than you earn: a consolidation loan probably won't help unless you cut spending or raise income4.
What our lender data shows
Figures we calculated from the published terms of the 13 providers we track, last checked 2026-11-02. They describe published ranges, not offers.
- 4 of 13 providers publish no origination fee (Citi, Discover, Navy Federal and 1 more).
- The middle of the highest published APRs is 35.99%, so the top of a range is often well above the advertised starting rate.
- The lowest published starting APR is 5.96% (Happen Bank), the largest loan amount is $100,000 (Wells Fargo) and the longest term is 84 months (Discover).
- 5 of 13 providers say they can pay creditors directly (Achieve, Best Egg, Discover and 2 more).
- 4 of 13 providers accept a co-borrower or joint application (Achieve, Happen Bank, Prosper and 1 more).
- Only 2 of 13 providers publish a minimum credit score (Achieve 560, Prosper 640); the rest leave it to underwriting.
What are the benefits and risks of consolidating?
- Benefit: Consolidation might lower monthly payments, make payments easier to manage, decrease interest rates and save money overall6. A lower rate on the new loan can also reduce the interest you pay in total9.
- Benefit: Paying card balances down with a loan may help your score8. Lenders read credit utilization over 30% as a sign of risk9. On-time payments on the new loan matter too, because payment history is the single most important factor in credit scores7.
- Risk: Upfront fees and the chance of ending up deeper in debt are real drawbacks6. The best terms generally need good credit, so you may not get a favorable offer9.
- Risk: A lower payment may come with a longer term, which means more interest over the life of the loan8.
- Risk: Applying can cost points. Each hard inquiry from a loan application may lower your score by a few points9.
- Risk: Paying down cards can free available credit if the accounts stay open20. A consolidation loan does not change credit behavior, and many people build new debt on top of consolidated debt8. Cutting access is usually better than closing accounts, since closing can hurt scores6.
- Risk: Missing a single payment by 30 days can considerably damage a credit score6. Unpaid debts may go to collection agencies, which could lead to a lawsuit10. Debt usually does not go away, but collectors have limited time to sue5.
- Risk: Some consolidation loans require your home as collateral, so you could lose it if payments are late5. If a loan is secured by your car, a car lender may repossess it when you are in default and does not have to give you any notice5. A home equity loan used for card debt risks foreclosure4. Borrowing from a 401(k) needs no credit check but is risky9.
How do you run your own numbers before you apply?
Check your credit reports. Reviewing them before consolidating helps you spot errors, which can be disputed8. Free reports are at annualcreditreport.com8.
List every debt. Write the balance, rate and monthly payment for each, then total the payments.
Get prequalified quotes. Many lenders offer prequalification, which allows rate quotes without negatively impacting your score6. Upgrade uses a soft inquiry for its rate check2. Best Egg does a hard inquiry if you accept an offer3. Citi does one on application16. Do not assume several applications count as one inquiry. Compare with soft-pull quotes instead.
Compare offers by APR. In a payment calculator, enter the interest rate and add any fee separately.
Subtract the fee. A 5% fee taken from proceeds on a $20,000 loan leaves $19,000 in cash. Ask each lender how large the loan must be to cover your payoffs.
Compare total paid, not just the payment. On a hypothetical $20,000 loan at 12% APR with no fee, total interest is $2,595 over 24 months but $5,280 over 48 months.
Ask about joint applications if you need one. Upgrade allows them2. Discover does not permit a co-applicant18.
Test affordability. The new payment must fit your budget without new card spending.
Move the debt safely. Keep paying every old account until each payoff is confirmed. Ask whether the lender pays creditors directly. Discover cannot be used to directly pay any Capital One account1. If a lender restricts a use, ask the lender or choose another one.
What does debt consolidation cost?
Costs can include interest and fees7, and some lenders list no origination fee1. A longer term can raise the total cost even when the payment is lower4. One guide puts origination fees at typically 1% to 6% of the loan6. Some lenders charge as much as 12%, deducted from the loan you receive7, so check every offer. Lenders differ. Discover lists 0%1. Best Egg lists 0.99% to 9.99%, and at least 4.99% on terms of 4 years or longer3. In a consolidation loan, one point equals one percent of the amount borrowed5. Late fees may apply too: Happen Bank's may apply after a 15-day grace period19. Rates depend on the applicant's credit score8. A quote is not a promise of approval or savings.
The table prices three other routes, so you can compare them with a personal loan. These are one guide's typical figures, and some products fall outside them.
| Cost | Typical figure | What to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Balance transfer fee | 3% to 5% of the transferred amount | Is it a percentage or a fixed amount, whichever is more? |
| Home equity closing costs | Can be hundreds or thousands of dollars | What is the written estimate before I apply? |
| Debt management plan fees | Setup around $50 and monthly $30 to $100 at some agencies | What is the full fee schedule? |

What does consolidating look like before and after?
This is a made-up example to show the math, not an offer. It assumes $22,000 in card debt, no new charges, and every payment made on time. The loan is sized at $23,158 so that $22,000 remains after a 5% origination fee.
The 36-month loan costs $7,543 less than the cards, with a payment $53 higher each month. The 60-month loan lowers the payment by $201 and saves $4,626. Run the same comparison with your own balances, rates and offer.

Who should skip debt consolidation, and what should they do instead?
Skip it when a new loan would only move the problem. Taking new debt to pay old debt may just postpone the problem unless you lower spending4. Pick the alternative that matches your situation:
Consolidation versus debt relief. Consolidation uses a new loan or card to pay old debts, ideally at a lower rate13. Debt settlement means hiring a company to negotiate and pay less than you owe13. Avoid settlement pitches posing as consolidation, because many companies advertising consolidation may actually be settlement firms10. A settlement company may tell you to stop paying and pay into a special account instead10. That shows up as a negative on your credit report10. Interest and penalty fees keep growing meanwhile10. A settlement company cannot collect fees before it settles your debt5.
- Overspending or unclear budget: talk to a nonprofit credit counselor, who can advise on managing money and paying off debts4. Counselors accredited through the NFCC or FCAA are recommended7.
- Behind on your mortgage: contact your lender immediately5. HUD-approved housing counseling is free, so you do not need to pay a private company5.
- Card debt you can't refinance: creditors might lower minimum payments, waive fees, cut rates or change due dates4. You can ask your card company yourself for free5.
- Several unsecured debts: a debt management plan combines them into one payment11. Most plans run three to five years11. Creditors are not required to lower rates or even join11. Most creditors require closing credit card accounts while the balance is repaid through the plan11, so cards in the plan will likely have to be closed12.
- Card balances you can clear fast: a balance transfer may fit, but the promotional rate lasts a limited time and may then rise4. Avoid new purchases on the transfer card, because there is no grace period for those purchases4.
Frequently asked questions
Will debt consolidation raise or lower my credit score?
It depends on the person. A score can rise, fall or stay flat. Credit mix makes up 10% of a FICO score, and cards and personal loans count as separate debt types.
Can I pay off a consolidation loan early?
Some lenders list no prepayment penalty, including Achieve and Citi. Terms differ by lender, so ask whether early payoff carries any charge before you sign.
Do I need collateral for a consolidation loan?
Debt consolidation loans are generally unsecured, so no collateral is required. Some lenders offer a choice. Upgrade offers an unsecured loan or one secured by a car. Confirm which type you are being offered.
How fast will I get the money?
Timing varies by lender: Discover funds as early as the next business day after acceptance. Best Egg funds 1-3 business days after successful verification. Keep paying your old accounts until each payoff is confirmed.
