Upgrade can be worth it if its offer, after the origination fee, costs less in total than what you pay now. If you only want a lower monthly payment, a longer term may deliver that but can cost more overall. Check your rate with a soft inquiry first.

Who should consider Upgrade, and who should skip it?

Upgrade fits you if you want to compare a personalized offer before committing and you can afford the payment once the fee is counted. It also fits if you want the option of applying jointly2 or of securing the loan with a car instead of borrowing unsecured2. Personal loans can cover debt consolidation, emergency expenses, home repairs and major purchases22, so the loan does not have to be about old debt.

If your main goal is to reduce what your debt costs, skip Upgrade if the offer you receive does not cost less in total than your current debt. If your goal is an essential need such as an emergency expense or home repair22, or a more manageable payment, weigh payment relief against total cost, because a lower monthly payment may mean paying over a longer period and costing more overall7. Skip it if your debt comes from spending more than you earn, because a consolidation loan probably won't help unless you cut spending or raise income7. Avoid it if your state is not served, since certain loan offers may not be available in all states4. If you skip, you can talk to your credit card company yourself for free rather than paying a company to do it8. Nonprofit credit counseling organizations can also advise on managing money and paying off debts7.

Compare published lender terms

The reviewed provider first, then four providers with the nearest starting APR, from their official pages and not ranked. Some providers are platforms working with partner lenders. The lowest rates can require conditions such as autopay or paying creditors directly, and terms vary by amount and state. Your own rate, amount and fee depend on your application, and approval is not guaranteed. Providers without a confirmed personal loan fee range are left out. Last checked 2026-11-02.

Upgrade and Navy Federal publish one range across secured and unsecured offers, so the terms for an unsecured loan alone may differ.

What are Upgrade's published loan terms and fees?

Upgrade publishes the terms below. Your own APR, amount and fee depend on your application, and lenders using risk-based pricing may charge a higher rate to borrowers with lower credit scores9.

The origination fee deserves the most attention. Origination fees are subtracted from loan proceeds, so you receive less than the approved amount10. APR includes interest plus other loan costs or fees, which makes it a useful way to compare loans12. It does not show the whole dollar cost by itself, though, because a longer repayment period can increase overall cost7. So also compare total payments, fees, net proceeds and repayment terms. Compare offers by APR, not by the monthly payment alone.

What are the benefits and risks of an Upgrade loan?

Weigh these against your own numbers, not against a general sense of the lender.

  • Benefit: The rate check uses a soft inquiry2, so you can see an offer before a hard check is involved.
  • Benefit: There is no prepayment penalty2, so paying early does not add a charge.
  • Benefit: A joint application is allowed2.
  • Benefit: Upgrade's lowest rates require both autopay and direct repayment of a portion of existing debt2, so any savings depend on the offer you actually receive.
  • Risk: The origination fee is taken from your proceeds10, so you may receive less than you need to cover a bill or payoff.
  • Risk: Interest and fees can make personal loans an expensive way to borrow22, especially at the high end of an applicant's range.
  • Risk: A full application typically triggers a hard inquiry that may cause a slight temporary dip in your score10.
  • Risk: Upgrade does not publish its late-fee amount or timing on the pages we checked, so ask before you sign. Verify both before accepting an offer.

How do Upgrade's terms differ from Discover, Best Egg and Wells Fargo?

The differences below use the same three criteria for each lender. Upgrade's own figures are in the terms table.

If a 0% fee matters most and you qualify at a lender that offers it115, compare that APR against Upgrade's. If you need a joint applicant, Upgrade permits joint applications while Discover does not220. If you need a long repayment term, Upgrade's 84-month maximum matches Discover and Wells Fargo2115.

  • Origination fee: Discover lists 0%1 and Wells Fargo lists 0%15. Best Egg lists 0.99% - 9.99%6, and its fee is at least 4.99% on terms of 4 years or longer6. Upgrade charges an origination fee of 1.85% - 9.99%3, so compare fee percentages with these figures and compare APRs separately, since APR also reflects interest12.
  • Paying creditors directly: Best Egg offers direct pay19. Discover does too, except for Capital One and Discover accounts20. Wells Fargo does not: funds go to your account first21. Upgrade pays creditors directly, and its lowest rates require both autopay and direct repayment of a portion of existing debt2.
  • Access and credit checks: Wells Fargo requires applicants to have been customers for at least 12 months15. Discover does not permit co-applicants20, while Upgrade allows joint applications2. Best Egg runs a hard inquiry if an offer is accepted6, while Upgrade's rate check is a soft inquiry2. These are different stages, though: a full application typically involves a hard inquiry10.

What happens if you cannot repay an Upgrade loan?

If you miss payments, the damage depends on whether the loan is secured. Defaulting on an unsecured loan does not cost you collateral, but it tends to have a major impact on your credit18. If a missed payment is not brought current, the lender will eventually send the account to its collections department or a collection agency18. A lender may also file a lawsuit to collect on an unsecured loan18. Once a debt is in collections, the original account may show on your credit history as a charge-off18.

The car-secured option adds another risk. A secured loan may cost less than an unsecured one, but defaulting on it can also cost you the collateral18. Check your loan agreement and applicable law to see what happens to the car if you default. Payment history carries the most weight in a FICO Score9. Before you borrow, ask Upgrade what hardship options exist if your income drops.

How do you apply for an Upgrade loan safely?

  1. Set your goal and limit. Decide whether you want to save money overall or lower your monthly payment, and write down the payment you can afford.

  2. Check your rate with a soft pull. Start with Upgrade's rate check2, and prequalify elsewhere the same way. Do not assume several loan applications count as one inquiry. Prequalifying does not guarantee you will qualify when you submit a formal application12.

  3. Read each offer in full. Note the APR, the fee, the term and whether the loan is secured by a car. In a payment calculator, use the contractual interest rate and principal, and model the fee the way the offer actually treats it (for example, subtracted from proceeds10, paid separately or financed). Then check the resulting payment and net proceeds against the lender's disclosures. Use APR only to compare offers.

  4. Decide whether to accept. You are not required to accept an offer if you are unhappy with the terms12. A formal application typically requires supporting documents such as pay stubs or tax returns12.

  5. Respond quickly to verification requests. Funding follows verification, so slow paperwork can delay the money2.

  6. Keep paying old accounts. If you are consolidating, keep making payments on each old account until you confirm it shows a paid-off balance.

  7. Watch for scams. Real lenders can require an application or appraisal fee before considering an application14. The warning sign is a fee demanded in exchange for a promised loan, because legitimate lenders do not promise a loan before you apply14. You can check a lender's registration with your state attorney general or banking regulator14.

  8. If you are denied, the lender must give written notice with either specific reasons or your right to get them within 30 days if you ask within 60 days17.

Frequently asked questions

Does applying for an Upgrade loan hurt my credit score?

The rate check is a soft inquiry, but moving to a full application typically triggers a hard inquiry, which usually causes a small, temporary decline in your score. A new loan can also lower your score a few more points because it decreases the average age of your accounts.

Can a personal loan help or hurt my credit?

It can go either way. A personal loan can help your credit score if you make on-time payments and use it responsibly. It can hurt if you make late payments or take on more debt than you can afford. Payment history is responsible for about 35% of a FICO Score.

Does Upgrade guarantee approval for bad credit?

No lender should. No legitimate lender offers a personal loan with approval assured in advance. Treat any offer that promises approval regardless of credit as a warning sign. Legitimate lenders check credit history and do not promise a loan before you apply. A conditional offer that depends on your formal application is different from a promise of approval. Ask Upgrade about its minimum score and income before you apply.

Is a debt settlement company a safer option than a loan?

Be careful. Debt settlement companies often charge up-front fees and may tell you to stop paying debts and move money into a special account. A debt settlement company cannot collect its fees from you before it settles your debt. Stopping payments carries its own risks. If a missed payment is not brought current, the account can go to collections, and a lender may sue to collect on an unsecured loan. Payment history also carries the most weight in a FICO Score. Before choosing settlement or new borrowing, consider talking to your creditors yourself for free, since creditors might agree to lower minimum payments, waive fees, reduce interest rates or change due dates. A nonprofit credit counseling organization can also advise on managing money and paying off debts.
